Washington Irving was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century, best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Irving spent several years traveling through Western Europe trying to find inspirations for his writings. He recorded his adventures on these journeys in several travel books and sketches.
