This Canadian novel was written in 1905 and dedicated to the Pilgrim Fathers. The St Cuthbert's of the title is a large Presbyterian cathedral that has a vacancy for a priest, and it is for this position that the hero of this story has applied. He and his wife Emmeline are very happily married but are now in debt. The prospect of this new position may, it is hoped, change their status.
