There are portraits of more than 50 famous historical figures in this 1889 book. They range from ancient Greek and Roman figures to Royalty, Reformers and Activists and to Military men. The selection has been made by G. T. Ferris, who writes in the preface that he has tried to select the writers who have given " the most vivid and truthful portrait obtainable". He also says that the book is intended to stimulate an interest in history.
